Description

Our workshop will cover the simplification and direct approach in understanding characteristics of light, shadow, atmospheric perspective and gradation for application in painting the effects of light.

If weather permits we will paint outside for one day -- so bring a French easel,  sunscreen and hat.

Whether your painting style may be abstract, experimental, realistic, etc., design and compositional aspects in using light will be discovered during this three day workshop.

Using light and shadow with sound approaches to directing the eye will be demonstrated. Utilizing painterly ideas and technical aspects pertaining to watercolor (or acrylic) will take place.

The class begins each morning with a spontaneous painterly demonstration/lecture designed to cover essential oil painting techniques etc. along with incorporating important discussions such as non-literal thinking and historical aspects in art which may apply to your style. Students will receive individual instruction and critique as well as group instruction in the studio. Students may also bring paintings done outside the class so that your general style can be discussed.

Emphasis will be on simplification and organization of darks and lights, value and color relationships, edges, massing shape, direction and other important design applications in creating unique and dynamic paintings, along with focusing on the spirit of each work.

How to incorporate value studies in your paintings as well as combining photographs to maximize your options in creating a masterpiece will also be discussed. We will be painting in the studio from setups, photos and drawings. Individual approaches to the variety of subject matter introduced in class will be encouraged as well as your creative spirit. Bring your favorite photos, especially those you have been saving for that "challenging" painting.

Through critically “seeing”, we will learn how to study light on form, compose it and pull it together for great painting. A value study and its application to one’s painting will be covered. A good time will be had by all! Some basic knowledge of drawing will be helpful.
