"Waterworks"
An Acrylic Workshop by Doug Oliver
By numerous requests, a workshop on water as primary subject matter.

A unique opportunity to work with contemporary Southwest landscape painter, Doug Oliver, held in a relaxed, casual atmosphere with open discussion with students.  This workshop is open to those with intermediate or advanced painting experience in any painting medium.  For this workshop however, acrylic medium is preferred.  This is not a workshop to introduce acrylics for the first time.  Fundamental or exploratory prior experience is requested.

Schedule: 9 am - 4 pm

  • Day 1 - Still Water
  • Day 2 - Waterfall
  • Day 3 - Seascape

Mornings: Oliver demonstrations in acrylic with questions and answers encouraged.

Lunch: Students are invited to bring their own lunch or break for lunch from Noon to 1 PM

Afternoons: Individual assistance on student painting on a rotating basis. 

Last Afternoon: Class critique will be conducted the last afternoon.

Subject Matter:
Students are requested to bring photos of water images in still, in motion and marine/sea for reference to paint their own canvas.

Please no copies of other artist's published work.

Titanium White (large tube) Yellow Oxide

  • Gloss Medium and Varnish

  • Drawing Pencil #2

  • Assortment of nylon brushers include Script Liners #1 and #3.

  • Paper Palette

  • Assortment of painting and/or palette knives

  • Water container  quart or larger

  • Spray bottle

  • Stretch canvas (cotton or linen) - 16' x 20' or larger

  • Paper Towels and trash bag

  • Easel (and stool if needed)

Note: Materials list is suggested only.  Emphasis here is on technique rather than a required materials list.  It is also suggestion that students could share some of the materials to prevent a large investment in acrylic supplies.

Instructor


Doug Oliver was born in Dayton Ohio in 1942 and came west to California as a young boy. He received his art education in California, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California Institute of the Arts (Chouinard Art Institute) and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Redlands, California.

Oliver is a former educator, teaching art in the California secondary and community college systems before committing to working full time in his studio in 1981.

Doug Oliver is represented in several premier art galleries throughout the West.  His dramatic paintings are hanging in some of the finest corporate and private collections in the nation.  His artwork is published and distributed by Leslie Levy Fine Art Publishing Inc., a division of Bentley Publishing Group and Winn-Devon Art Group, worldwide distributors of fine art prints and posters.

His art has been featured in Art of the West  and Southwest Art magazines.  His signature subject matter, for which he is most widely known, are images of soaring skies and luminous clouds over the western landscape.

Today, he lives with his wife Barbara in northern Arizona overlooking the beautiful  Prescott National Forest. The spectacular view from their home and studio  is one they  describe as “half-way to heaven.”

They have two grown sons: Jeffrey, web developer and computer consultant for Amylin Pharmaceuticals in San Diego, and Jason, Music and Sound Editor for Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.
