The emphasis will be on restricting values to four, control of edges and interlocking shapes.

Each day will begin with a short demonstration

Day 1

  • We will work from a still life set up using interlocking shapes and values.

Day 2

  • Continue painting form a still life set up. 

  • We will work on color, shapes, values and unity. 

Day 3

  • Painting from the model.

  • We will work on color, modeling, values, correct anatomy and unity. 

Day 4

  • Continue painting from the model.

  • There will be a critique the last hour of the class.

  • Four (4) 20" x 16" Canvas

  • Brushes - #6, #8, and #10 flat and #8 filbert bristle brushes

  • Oil Colors
    - Alizarin
    - Cadmium Yellow Light
    - Cadmium Yellow Medium
    - Ultramarine Blue
    - Cadmium Red Light
    - Viridian
    - White

  • Odorless Turpentine or Odorless Mineral Spirits

  • Easel

  • Paper towels, rags, plastic bag (for trash)

Dorothy Ray, a native of Arizona, is an accomplished and devoted artist dedicated to expressing her love of art.  Beginning with an Associate of Art degree at Phoenix College, Dorothy has furthered her artistic training through a variety of courses at Glendale Community College, local workshops, on-going figure sketch groups and self-study.  She has also traveled abroad to Italy and France to attend workshops and gather resources to include in her repertoire.  Most recently, she traveled to England to gather additional reference material.

As an extension of her own value for the arts, she taught watercolor and oil painting classes for several years.  Occasionally, she has juried art exhibitions.  She has long been a juried member of Arizona Artists Guild, Arizona Watercolor Association and is an associate member of Oil Painters of America.  Attesting to her artistic skill, she has received many awards.  Her work has been purchased and displayed in both private and corporate collections.  She has participated in the Celebration of Fine Art in Scottsdale for twelve years.
