MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOPS

Expressive, Luminous Paintings with Impressionistic Brushwork’
with Betty Carr, AISM, APAP, KA
May 15-16, 10 am – 1 pm | ZOOM CLASS
For beginners with some experience to advanced levels
As a Master in the American Impressionist Society, Betty will be emphasizing how to achieve impressionistic and dynamic paintings using loose and painterly brushwork while capturing light.
In this online workshop, the focus will be on the "how-tos" of establishing depth using atmospheric perspective, understanding temperatures of light and shadow, and working with hard and soft edges when applying paint in oil. The goal will be to create beautiful, harmonious landscapes to visually entice the viewer.
Betty will be demonstrating during the class how to render a combination of glowing and limiting light to strengthen the composition and give emphasis to the focal point. You will learn various ways to create textural effects in oil using impressionistic and painterly brushwork in the landscape.
You will be receiving reference materials to guide you through this exciting and informative workshop.

Painting Expressively with Color
Russell Johnson, Instructor
September 14 & 15 / 9 am - 4 pm
Mountain Artists Guild & Gallery, 228 N. Alarcon, Prescott
Learn impressionistic oil and acrylic painting techniques with accomplished Arizona landscape artist Russell Johnson during a two-day workshop. The goal of this workshop is to portray a visual experience of nature focusing on how it felt to witness nature’s splendor. This will be done through simplification of a composition, seeing value of colors appropriately, using color expressively, and applying paint texturally. Russell paints almost primarily with a palette knife, enjoying the sculptural qualities it produces. The student is welcome to learn palette knife painting or use a large brush to energetically represent the natural landscape. The two day workshop will consist of sketching from photographs, color mixing, setting up the painting, and finally, completing the painting. Live demonstrations by Russell throughout the workshop!
Russell Johnson grew up in Prescott. He is an avid hiker. On his explorations, Russell paints “en plein aire,” sketches and photographs subjects for future studio paintings. Russell received a BFA from the University of Arizona and a MFA from Prescott College. He regularly participates in two annual Prescott art shows: The Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale, and the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour. He is represented by the Raku Gallery in Jerome and The Frame & I in Prescott. Russell also has two paintings in the permanent collection at The Phippen Museum.
