MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOPS

SEPTEMBER

Six Step Thought Process

Plein Air Workshop in Sedona with Cody DeLong, Instructor

Wednesday, September 30,  8 am – 3 pm

Red Rock Crossing (Crescent Moon State Park Picnic Site)

Is painting En Plein Air something you love to do or want to explore?  Come and paint with fellow artists as we learn from Cody DeLong. This one day plein air workshop is designed to give you the tools to think like a pro when painting on your own. Knowing the right questions to ask yourself, in the right order, is the greatest single thing you can do to take your work to the next level. Cody will be demonstrating in oil. Attending artists can work in the medium of their choice and still benefit from the instruction.

ABOUT Cody DeLong:

Cody has been working in oils for about 25 years and selling his  work in Jerome, AZ for nearly 20 years. Today, he is a nationally recognized artist featured in numerous magazines including “Southwest Art” and is invited to several national events each year. He has won awards at these events.  Cody says “The real reason I paint though, is simply because I love it. Creativity is a delicate mistress. I love the dance between passion and skill, between knowledge and learning. I think it shows in my work.”

Those signing up will be able to form small car pools if comfortable riding with others. The park requires a daily parking fee. Bring a lunch and beverages. Supply list is available under the registration button.

OCTOBER

Plein Air for Everyone

with Julie Gilbert Pollard

October 23 and 26, 2020, 9 am – 4 pm Lynx Lake and Watson Lake Demos in Watercolor and Oil, Acrylic painters also welcome

OPTIONAL ZOOM class follow-up on Thursday November 5, 9 am to Noon

Painting out in the open air can be both exciting and intimidating, relaxing and frustrating, exhilarating and petrifying. Julie will address the idea that we can find a spectrum of possibilities to make plein air painting work beautifully, even if you are not a hard core plein air painter. This workshop is dedicated to “light” plein air work - two days of enjoying autumn days at beautiful Lynx and Watson Lakes with no pressure! We will spend time sketching and ‘light” plein air painting and “photo-sketching” (using minimal plein air equipment – suggested supply list will be provided). You are welcome to bring any plein air setup you like, but a minimal set-up is encouraged to keep you mobile! In addition to traditional oil painting methods, a unique technique will be introduced for plein air oil - doing the block-in with watercolor, the more mobile medium.

You will be encouraged to find several scenes you would like to spend time with later in your studio, doing simple studies for that purpose - or starting a painting in a prescribed manner that lends itself to a studio finishing. There will be lessons that lead you through a process of simplifying a scene and maintaining the “plein air feel” when returning to the studio. If you decide to stay with one composition and develop it further, the choice is yours. Both locations offer varied scenery with the opportunity for a bit of exploration, but there is plenty to see and paint if you don’t want to go far. There will be demos, instruction at all levels as needed, critique and lots of painting time. All levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. The only prerequisite is an attitude of joy in the act of painting.

The follow-up Zoom class will feature a demo by Julie as well as an opportunity to have your work critiqued if you send it to Julie ahead of the class. There are ten days between the end of the plein air session and the Zoom class.
