MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOPS

Expressive, Luminous Paintings with Impressionistic Brushwork’
with Betty Carr, AISM, APAP, KA
May 15-17, 9 am – 4 pm
Mountain Artists Guild & Gallery, 228 N. Alarcon, Prescott
For beginners with some experience to advanced levels
Capturing the beauty of light through studying temperatures of light and shadow, visual movement and value/color relationships will be demonstrated in this workshop. As a Master in the American Impressionist Society (AISM), Carr will be emphasizing the "how to's" in achieving dynamic, impressionistic paintings using painterly brushwork in watercolor and oil. Massing, organizing and composing darks and lights, importance of value sketches, and atmospheric and linear perspective will be covered.
Each morning starts with a demonstration and discussion on simple proven techniques for successful, beautiful paintings. We will "warm up" by painting a variety of brush techniques which will apply later to our future paintings. Painting rocks, foliage, water clouds, etc. in striking light will be introduced. Individual and group critiques will take place throughout the workshop.
Photos will be a source of inspiration for our work. We will learn how to combine photos to create that one of a kind painting incorporating light and shadow. Bring your favorite landscape and floral still life photos with great lighting for designing your compositions.
Through individual instruction, observing daily demonstrations/critiques and producing numerous studies and paintings, students will develop a personal style in their artistic directions as well as gaining inspiration and enthusiasm for future paintings.

Painting Expressively with Color
Russell Johnson, Instructor
Mountain Artists Guild & Gallery, 228 N. Alarcon, Prescott
Learn impressionistic oil and acrylic painting techniques with accomplished Arizona landscape artist Russell Johnson during a two-day workshop. The goal of this workshop is to portray a visual experience of nature focusing on how it felt to witness nature’s splendor. This will be done through simplification of a composition, seeing value of colors appropriately, using color expressively, and applying paint texturally. Russell paints almost primarily with a palette knife, enjoying the sculptural qualities it produces. The student is welcome to learn palette knife painting or use a large brush to energetically represent the natural landscape. The two day workshop will consist of sketching from photographs, color mixing, setting up the painting, and finally, completing the painting. Live demonstrations by Russell throughout the workshop!
Russell Johnson grew up in Prescott. He is an avid hiker. On his explorations, Russell paints “en plein aire,” sketches and photographs subjects for future studio paintings. Russell received a BFA from the University of Arizona and a MFA from Prescott College. He regularly participates in two annual Prescott art shows: The Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale, and the Prescott Area Artists Studio Tour. He is represented by the Raku Gallery in Jerome and The Frame & I in Prescott. Russell also has two paintings in the permanent collection at The Phippen Museum. Visit www.russelljohnsonart.net for portfolio viewing and further information.
